QUICK TIP: Identifying your website color preferences
Identifying Your Website Color Preferences
One of the questions asked during the initial phases of a web design project is “Do you have a preferred color scheme for your website?” Identifying color schemes is generally viewed as the fun part. Unfortunately, the easiest answer is to use the colors in the business logo. However, if your logo contains only one color, you will generally want to identify at least one or two complimentary colors to use throughout your website.
Many people become overwhelmed or indifferent when answering this question, then later in the design process realize that they really didn’t prefer purple and green. Use the following strategies for identifying your preferred color palette for your website:
1. List 3 websites with colors that attract you (preferably industry related websites).
2. Identify your color preference by select one or more of the following color preferences: Your company logo, Reds, Blues, Purples, Oranges and Yellows, Pastels, Greens, Black and white, Monochromes, Bold colors, Muted colors, Fall Colors, Ocean etc.
3. Use one of the many color theory websites to assist you in identifying inspiring color palettes for your website. On Colourlovers.com you can view some of the top rated palettes created by people who use and love color. You can also search for palettes containing your favorite color. The site includes a great feature that allows you to create a palette using a photo as “inspiration”. Here’s a color palette created using a photo of the
